Making Your Home a Haven with Candles

What kinds of things do you do to make your home a haven?

The other day I had gotten home from a very tiring and stressful day. I actually had a couple of pretty stressful and busy weeks.

My sweet man told me to take some time to "recharge". So he took the kids out for a couple of hours. I was really looking forward to sitting down at the computer and catching up on some online scrapbooking, getting a shower invitation ready that I am hosting, planning the party, catching up on emails, browsing Pinterest to get some ideas for the party, make an Amazon order, look up some Christmas gift items etc.. etc... I was going to do all this in quiet. I planned to be efficient and productive. (obviously not resting)

All of which I needed to use the computer

Guess What?!? Our internet was down the whole time my family was gone. I spent the first 30 minutes being frustrated that I couldn't cross things off my "to do's".

But then I decided to change my attitude. I lit a Wood Wick crackling pumpkin caramel candle, turned off all the main lights and kept only the candle and lamps lit, turned on some music that I enjoy, and cozied up on my couch with a journal, book to read, and my bible.

I spent the next 1 1/2 hours refueling and recharging myself spending time with the One who loves me most.
I spent time with the only one who could give me rest.

"Come to me all you who are heavy laden and
I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

What I was going to do with my alone time would not have refreshed myself at all. It would have just left me with a longer list of to do's. I'm glad my internet was down. It was exactly what I needed.

I lit that candle just for me and my home. Since that evening I have lit that same candle everyday.

We have lit our candles for dinner every night. Just for us.

My toddlers have grown to love it. They ask for candles on the table for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I enjoy adding the extra special touches to make our house a home.

I'm thankful for that evening that I couldn't get anything done.

What kinds of things do you do to make your house a home?

  1. Great post! I too love the warmth of a candle and how it slows us down in life. I make our house a home by making things by hand. The more I see my own mark in my house, the more it feels like ours and a place we cherish!

    1. Agreed~ Thank you so much for stopping by! :) I'm naturally a "Martha" so I have to be super intentional about slowing down:)

  2. I actually just wrote a post which will go up in December about how my mother-in-law is such a wonderful "homemaker." She has a special gift for creating a "haven," and I am working to get better at it! I want my family to feel that our home is a safe, cozy place as well.

Sorry for filling your blog up with comments today! lol :)

    1. I'm with ya! I'm super learning as I go and have some great examples to learn from. My mother-in-law is also excellent at creating nice spaces.
